Project helps students learn about homelessness issues
Somersfield Academy's M4 students designed shelters for the homeless, learning about the systemic causes of homelessness and engaging with experts from Home. The project aimed to challenge stereotypes and create practical, sustainable solutions for housing, while raising awareness of homelessness in Bermuda.
The Montessori Approach to Mathematics
Montessori students use concrete hands-on learning materials that make abstract concepts more clear. Lessons and activities are introduced simply and concretely and are reintroduced several times during the following years at increasing degrees of abstraction and complexity.
Designing with Compassion: M4 Students Learn About Homelessness from HOME Bermuda
Local charity HOME visited our M4 Design class to shed light on the realities of homelessness and the challenges of providing shelter for the unhoused in Bermuda. The presenters brought nuance and humanity to a community that is often overlooked. Students will apply the insights gained from this visit to design shelters for vulnerable populations, with their work to be showcased at an upcoming event.
Diving into Adventure: M2 Students Take on 'Kids On The Reef'
Our M2 students took part in Kids On The Reef, an immersive marine conservation programme led by Dr. Alex Amat. They learned about marine ecosystems, snorkelled in local waters, and tried free-diving, reaching depths of 6 metres!
Caribou Mathematics Competitions
The Somersfield Mathematics department are delighted to announce the 2024-2025 Caribou Mathematics Competitions at Somersfield Academy. Caribou Mathematics is a Canadian based international educational platform that offers the opportunity for students, from P1 to DP2, to enter up to six online competitions each year.
Dr. Vernon Morris Sparks STEM Enthusiasm at Somersfield
We had the privilege of hosting Dr. Vernon Morris at Somersfield recently, where he delivered an enlightening science demonstration and talk to our eager M4 and M5 students. Dr. Morris's visit to Bermuda was made possible through the generous support of Karen Grissette, the US Consul General and a Somersfield parent.

Royal Gazette — Vernon Morris, a professor of chemistry and environmental sciences and the director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Arizona State University, has mentored more than 200 students, while his programmes have reached more than 50,000 students worldwide. We’re looking forward to welcoming him on campus this week.
Tech Training for Somersfield Teachers
Somersfield Academy teachers took to the classroom yesterday as students to learn about the latest educational technologies which included Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Coding, Papertronics, Little-Bits electronics, robotics, AI (artificial intelligence), 3D printing and makerspaces.
Somersfield Students Empower Peers and Promote STEM in Community Projects
Somersfield students showcased their creativity and community impact through the M3 Community Project. Teams addressed various needs, including empowering girls with workshops on art, dance, and writing, and launching a VEX IQ robotics programme at West Pembroke Primary School to promote STEM learning. Their efforts highlighted Somersfield's commitment to inspiring socially conscious, independent thinkers.
Somersfield Students Launch Robotics Programme at West Pembroke, Bridging Tech Gaps for Bermuda’s Youth
Somersfield students Kairo Morton, Bobby Cooper, and Enoch Richardson are teaching robotics to students at West Pembroke Primary through a 13-week programme called BermyBots. Kairo, who created the initiative, aims to bridge the tech gap between public and private schools. With $6,000 in sponsorship, the boys hope to expand BermyBots into a camp, empowering more Bermudian children with tech skills.
