The Montessori Approach to the Language Arts
The Montessori language curriculum approaches reading, writing and grammar in an integrated way and allows students to explore Montessori materials that is aesthetically beautiful and sequentially organised. Through the scope and sequence of the materials, teachers guide students towards an appreciation of the complexity of the English language and provide a concrete understanding of nuances that develop.
The Montessori Approach to Mathematics: Place Value
Place value is a huge focus in the Montessori math programme. Students are introduced to the concept of place value by working with The Golden Bead Material which allows students to explore the concept of place value in a sensorial way.
M1 Students Explore Archaeology at Fort Hamilton
M1 students visited Fort Hamilton for an engaging field trip led by archaeologist Florence Laino. They explored Bermuda’s history through hands-on archaeology, map-reading, and artifact examination. Students also learned about the fort’s tunnels, its historical significance, and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
Minister Tinée Furbert Visits Somersfield
The Hon. Tinee Furbert, Minister of Youth, Social Development, & Seniors, visited Somersfield Academy for the TOYA ZONE event, engaging with students on challenges they face. She also toured the Design Lab, where M4 students presented innovative shelter designs addressing homelessness with sustainable solutions.

From their first steps, children are immersed in the magic of music, moving to various moods and rhythms. They journey from clapping familiar beats to reading and notating music, improvising melodies, and composing their own pieces. Somersfield’s vibrant curriculum, rich in performance and appreciation, not only nurtures creativity but also deepens cultural understanding.
Heroic Teacher Saves Student's Life at Thankful Lunch
During Somersfield Academy's Thankful Lunch, a student began choking, but primary teacher Lucrecia Simmons quickly sprang into action. Using abdominal thrusts, she cleared the child’s airway in seconds, saving their life. The grateful parents donated to the school in her honour, highlighting the importance of emergency training for educators.
Project helps students learn about homelessness issues
Somersfield Academy's M4 students designed shelters for the homeless, learning about the systemic causes of homelessness and engaging with experts from Home. The project aimed to challenge stereotypes and create practical, sustainable solutions for housing, while raising awareness of homelessness in Bermuda.
Get Involved: Help Construct a Mud Kitchen for Our Children's House Division!
The Children’s House Division is excited to build a new mud kitchen at the playground and invites parents and senior students to volunteer. Led by Mr. Russell Peters, Secondary Physics Teacher, volunteers will also help relocate the compost enclosure. Tools provided; mallets welcome. Refreshments included.
U13 Boys Make History with Knockout Cup Win!
Congratulations to the U13 boys football team on their historic 2-1 victory over Warwick Academy in the Knockout Cup final! MVP Cairo Burgess scored both goals, including a last-minute penalty. Thanks to the players, coaches & supporters for their teamwork & dedication.
