Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion
At Somersfield, we are committed to fostering an environment where all members of our community feel valued, respected, and included. Our JEDI committee plays a vital role in advancing these principles throughout our school. We work collaboratively to develop initiatives, policies, and practices that ensure equal opportunities for all students, staff, and families academically, socially, and emotionally.
Somersfield students joined Director of Student Life Ms Tanisha Edwards at a CURB-hosted tribute to Dr Eva Hodgson, honouring her legacy of justice, education & truth. The school was recognised for supporting her vision—a powerful moment that reflects our mission in action.
In the spirit of this year’s Heritage Month theme, “The Future is Now,” students engaged with hands-on stations exploring Bermuda’s evolving identity. From sustainable agriculture and clean energy to cultural cornerstones like the Gombey and island architecture, the afternoon sessions sparked curiosity about how heritage and innovation can shape a thriving future for Bermuda.
From marbles to box sledding and jump rope to can stilts, our morning was filled with the vibrant energy of Bermuda’s traditional childhood games. These playful stations not only sparked laughter and collaboration but offered a window into the creative, outdoor play of the past—reminding us that meaningful fun doesn’t require a screen.
Our CH and LP students raced from “St. George’s” to “Hamilton” in the Somersfield Bermuda Day Mini Marathon! With big smiles, fast feet & roaring support, they brought the island spirit to our field. Congrats to all our runners—you made it a day to remember!
This month, we are celebrating Bermuda Heritage Month! We’re excited to welcome several local legends to our Bermuda Heritage Month Activity Day on May 22. Primary students will rotate through cultural stations and enjoy traditional Bermuda games, while Children’s House students will join in the fun with classic island favourites of their own.
At Somersfield, our values guide us to meet each child where they are—academically, emotionally, and socially. Talking to children about autism reinforces respect, curiosity over judgement, and inclusive, peaceful communities rooted in empathy and understanding.
Somersfield Academy students Marc Rajeh '26, Zarah Siddiqi '26, Samantha Binega-Northcott '26, and Kiara Weeks-George '26, led by Ms. Tanisha Edwards, joined Bermuda’s MLK Day ceremony at City Hall. Honouring Dr. King’s legacy, their participation highlighted Somersfield’s commitment to justice and global citizenship.
At Somersfield Academy, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where every member feels respected and appreciated. Tonight is Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, when fasting is central to its observance, is known as the Day of Atonement.
The cultural tapestry of Bermuda blossomed through the inception of Heritage Month and Bermuda Day, born from the fervent desire to foster unity amidst social turmoil. In the wake of civil unrest during the 1960s and 1970s, the Pitt Report of 1978 illuminated the need for communal harmony and civic pride.
At Somersfield Academy, we are committed to nurturing an inclusive community where all members feel valued and supported. As we enter the fasting seasons of Ramadan, The Bahá’í Nineteen Day Fast, and Lent, it is essential to understand and respect the religious observances of our diverse student body and staff to ensure that we foster inclusivity and support during fasting observations.
