The ceremony featured statements of peace from each SLC member, including powerful speeches by SLC President Dezirae Darrell, who highlighted the importance of promoting peace in our communities and the world by standing against violence and injustice, embracing diversity, and taking small, meaningful actions to create a more compassionate and united society; and SLC Chair of Diversity Yemaya Iris, who emphasised that true peace is built on justice, equality, kindness, and inclusion, encouraging everyone to embrace differences, speak up against wrongdoing, and actively create a supportive, respectful community—before leading a minute of silence.
At the heart of Somersfield’s philosophy is the belief that education is a powerful tool for peace. The Montessori and International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes, both of which are integral to the school’s curriculum, share a global perspective that nurtures students to become active contributors to a peaceful future. Dr Montessori’s approach aligns seamlessly with the IB’s peace education principles, including human rights, environmental education, and conflict resolution.
Somersfield’s mission of inspiring socially conscious, independent thinkers, together with these educational philosophies, creates a learning environment that prioritises academic achievement and promotes a lifelong dedication to building a more peaceful world.
“When we look at the news both locally and internationally, we are challenged by the conflicts that exist around us. Our International Day of Peace ceremony is a reminder that peace begins with each of us.” said Riki Teteina, Head of School at Somersfield Academy. “When our students come together to reflect on empathy, respect, and our shared humanity, they are not only honouring this tradition but also shaping the kind of world they wish to live in. This day reinforces our belief that education is one of the most powerful tools we have to build a more compassionate, kind, and peaceful future.”
