International Day of Peace Address from SLC Chair of Diversity Yemaya Iris
On Friday, September 19, Yemaya Iris, Student Leadership Council’s Chair of Diversity, spoke powerfully at Somersfield Academy’s International Day of Peace ceremony, highlighting that true peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of justice, equality, and respect. Drawing on the United Nations’ vision and the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World”, she encouraged the community to embrace diversity, challenge injustice, and take daily actions to create a culture of peace both within the school and beyond.
Good morning Everyone,
Today we gather to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Today we are reminded that peace is not simply the absence of war — it is the presence of justice, equality, and respect. And right here in our school, we have the chance to live that out.
“Peace is the most powerful force for a better future and its within our grasp- if we choose it. Even in a fractured world, we can come together to let peace ring” this is a quote by Antonio Guterres the United Nations Secretary General.
What does peace mean to you? Is it silence, or is it justice? Is it the absence of war, or the presence of kindness?
The International Day of Peace was established in1981 through a unanimous United Nations resolution. It is a globally shared date for humanity to commit to peace. To lay our differences aside no matter how small or big, and most importantly to contribute and commit to building a Culture of peace. We have to speak up against violence, hate, discrimination, and inequality; practice respect; and embrace the diversity of our world.
However, peace starts right here within our community. It starts with how we greet one another in the hallway, how we resolve conflicts, how we listen to each other and bring a voice to those who have lost theirs. This year the Peace Day theme is “Act now for a peaceful world” so spark necessary conversations, Volunteer in your community, and challenge discriminatory language.
Peace isn’t just about avoiding and resolving conflict. It’s about how we embrace one another’s differences. Peace prospers when we celebrate each other. When we celebrate different cultures, identities, and perspectives, because diversity prevents division from turning into hostility. Let our differences be our strength.
Before I leave you all I encourage you to choose and practice peace not just today- but everyday. Practice kindness, listening to each other without judgement, and standing up against bullying or exclusion.
Peace isn’t just a future we can hope for- its one we can build together in our community in our school, In our world. The future of peace starts with us. I’ll leave you with a quote.
"For it isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it." — Eleanor Roosevelt
I will now end with a moment of silence to commit to peace as conflicts around the world arise. I urge us all to take a moment of silence now to acknowledge those around the world suffering through conflicts and hoping for peace.
Moment of silence.
Thank you
