Finding Joy in Volunteering: Jo-Rena Davis’s Story
Volunteering is at the heart of Somersfield, and every parent who steps forward helps strengthen the sense of community that makes our school so special. One such parent is Jo-Rena Davis, who began volunteering when her son joined the Cardinal class and has since taken on a wide variety of roles — from reading in classrooms to serving hot chocolate in the library. Most recently, Jo-Rena stepped up to coordinate the 5K Fun Run, combining her love of running with her commitment to giving back.
We sat down with Jo-Rena to hear about her experiences, what she has gained, and why she encourages other parents to get involved.
How did you first get involved as a volunteer at Somersfield?
I started volunteering in 2023 when my son was a full-day student in the Cardinal class.
What made you say “yes” to coordinating the 5K Fun Run?
Our family had a great time participating in the Fun Run last year. It was very well organised. Having enjoyed running for many years, and having previously volunteered and supported running events in Bermuda and elsewhere, I decided to donate my time and take on the role of volunteer coordinator.
What other volunteer roles have you enjoyed around the school?
Some that come to mind are reading to the class in Children’s House, chaperoning field trips, annual craft mornings, and serving the children hot chocolate in the library.
What have you personally gained from volunteering here?
For starters, I’ve been so fortunate to volunteer alongside some incredible class moms and grandmas—we’ve had a blast working together! And the children at Somersfield are absolute gems, each one shining with their own special strengths and personalities.
It’s heartwarming to see the teachers in action, giving each child the attention and support they need to thrive and grow independently. But what really melts my heart is seeing my own child light up when he sees me volunteering—it’s the best feeling in the world! Watching him explore, learn, and gain confidence in the classroom and beyond is an absolute privilege, and I feel so grateful to be part of his educational journey.
What would you tell parents who are thinking about getting involved but aren’t sure where to start?
If you’re a parent considering getting involved but aren’t sure where to start, I’d say come join in whenever you can! You’ll meet wonderful parents and faculty who are a joy to get to know.
I understand that daytime commitments can be tough, but there are opportunities as short as 15 minutes, like Pizza Fridays, as well as events on weekends and evenings. Volunteering is a great way to build connections, strengthen community, and make a lasting positive impact. Every contribution counts!
