International Day of Peace Address from SLC Chair of Diversity Yemaya Iris
Yemaya Iris, Student Leadership Council’s Chair of Diversity, spoke powerfully at Somersfield Academy’s International Day of Peace ceremony, highlighting that true peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of justice, equality, and respect. Drawing on the United Nations’ vision and the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World”, she encouraged the community to embrace diversity, challenge injustice, and take daily actions to create a culture of peace both within the school and beyond.

Student Leadership Council President, Dezirae Darrell delivered a moving address at Somersfield Academy’s International Day of Peace ceremony. Speaking with conviction, she reminded the community of the urgent call to action behind this year’s theme—“Act Now for a Peaceful World”—and the shared responsibility each of us holds in building a more compassionate and united society.

International Peace Day: A Time for Reflection and Action
At Somersfield, celebrating the International Day of Peace is a cherished tradition. This year, it was led by the student council, who addressed critical global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, the devastating earthquake in Morocco, and the wildfires that raged in Hawaii.
The entire school community gathered to listen to these impassioned speeches, fostering awareness and empathy among students, the ceremony was live-streamed, allowing the message of peace to resonate beyond the school walls.
Somersfield Academy Holds Peace Day
Somersfield Academy celebrated Peace Day on September 21 with messages of peace and reflection led by M5 Prefects. The event included a solo performance of John Lennon's "Imagine" by M5 Prefect Lily Crofts and a time capsule ceremony initiated by primary students Zoe Mir and Grace Lightowler. The capsule, to be opened on the school’s 50th anniversary, was placed at the centre of the school's Legacy Walkway.
Somersfield Academy Peace Day
Somersfield Academy launched a "Coins For A Cause" fundraising drive from September 21 to 28, supporting Caribbean island residents impacted by storms. Coinciding with the UN's International Day of Peace, the initiative encourages students to donate for rebuilding efforts. The school began Peace Day with reflections, peace messages, and a global sing-along of "Light a Candle for Peace."
Sounds of Peace at Somersfield
Somersfield Academy celebrated United Nations Day on October 24 with a ceremony rededicating its peace poles. Mrs Margaret Hallett, former Principal, highlighted the school's peace-loving ethos. Students of all ages participated, culminating in the song Let There Be Peace on Earth.
Senegal presidential candidate visits Somersfield Academy
Somersfield Academy marked the UN's Day of Peace with a visit from Senegalese presidential candidate Moustapha Mbacke. He shared insights on Senegal's future, political climate, and potential partnerships.
