DP1 Students Explore Energy Innovation at BELCO

On Friday, May 2nd, Somersfield Academy’s DP1 Business students were invited to BELCO for a unique behind-the-scenes experience during Occupational Health & Safety (OHSE) Day: Student Seminar on Your Energy Future.

The visit provided a rare opportunity to explore areas of the BELCO site that are typically restricted to the public. Students learned first-hand about operational protocols, production methods, cost considerations, and sustainable energy strategies from one of Bermuda’s most vital utility providers.

Led by Ms. Jernigan and Mr. Peters, the group engaged with Dr. Jeffrey Steynor, Director of Energy Transition and Business Development, who shared insights into renewable technology developments and the feasibility of diverse energy options in Bermuda. The interactive seminar allowed students to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of how BELCO is planning for a more sustainable electric future.

Due to PIPA privacy laws and the safety protocols of the secured zone, photo opportunities were limited, but the impact of the experience was lasting. Students walked away with a clearer understanding of what energy production entails and how businesses strategise for long-term environmental responsibility.

We extend our thanks to BELCO for hosting our students and sharing their vision for Bermuda’s energy future.
