End of term fun featured kites, scavenger hunt and quiz

On the last day of the second term at Somersfield Academy, MYP students enjoyed a special Fun Day packed with activities. The day began with a school-wide scavenger hunt, where students raced to solve riddles and find answers posted around the school. They then gathered materials for kite-making, participated in a general knowledge quiz, and tackled various challenges. The day concluded with flying Bermuda kites and a countdown to the term's end.

At the Somersfield Academy Science Fair on February 20, the school's gym was transformed into a showcase for student scientific investigations. One hundred students, aged 11 to 14, presented projects on topics like plant growth and alternative energy. Judged by 24 local scientific experts, the fair highlighted the students' understanding and creativity. Notable winners included Chris Doherty with "Can Coke and Candy Give You Gas?" and Giles Lorimer Turner with "Ant Invaders." Head of Middle Year Programme Science, Sharlene Young, praised the event as a highlight of the year.

Students Showcase Creative Personal Projects in IB Exhibition

Nine students from Somersfield Academy's International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme will showcase their personal projects on Friday from 10am to 12.45pm. Projects include kite-making, a photo gallery with poems, a music video, a documentary on youth violence, soccer skills videos, original music, a mural, and a personal identity documentary. Each project integrates an 'area of interaction' such as community service or human ingenuity. The public is invited to attend and view these creative endeavours.

IS CHICKEN REALLY GOOD FOR YOU? Eleven-year-old Aiyetoro Hinds tackles the meaty issue in a school science project

An 11-year-old Somersfield student, Aiyetoro Hinds, studied the effects of chicken feed on growth and behaviour for a science project. Over 16 days, he observed that chickens fed fortified feed grew faster but exhibited aggressive behaviour and developed unhealthy organs. Organic-fed chickens were smaller, more active, and tasted better. The study led Aiyetoro and his family to question the healthiness of conventional chicken, citing potential links to obesity and aggression in humans.

Somersfield Academy's Nate Lang Wins Bermuda SpellDown, Bringing Home Top Prizes for School

Somersfield Academy student Nate Lang, age 10, won the Bermuda SpellDown, securing the title of Bermuda's best speller. Competing against 22 students from various schools, Nate triumphed in the finals held at Mount Saint Agnes. He won a Disney World cruise, a laptop, and a Phoenix Stores certificate. Additionally, Somersfield Academy received a hi-tech printer and fax machine as part of Nate's victory.
