Somersfield Science fair is a time of tension and reward
In January, Somersfield Academy students dive into science fair preparations, tackling experiments from M1 through M3. Despite the stress, it's an exciting chance to explore personal interests with full topic freedom. The gym transforms into a showcase of colourful, detailed projects. Students present their work to judges and visitors, with awards for top projects and visual presentation. Science teachers, Mrs. Perry and Mrs. Younge, play a crucial role in this educational event. For my final fair, I investigated age and gender impacts on smell, winning 2nd place and a visual presentation award.
Somersfield's Dominant Backcourt Leads to Victory in Final
Somersfield dominated the Boys' Basketball Final, never trailing throughout the match. Led by their aggressive backcourt duo, Karim Creary and MVP Lucas Barbay, who scored 20 points with 15 from the free throw line, Somersfield's technical skill and athleticism secured a decisive victory over Berkeley Institute.
Somersfield Academy Sponsors Lecture on Male Apathy Towards Education
Dr. Leonard Sax, author of Boys Adrift, will deliver a lecture at Somersfield on February 8, discussing the growing issue of male apathy in education. The event will cover topics such as video games, teaching methods, and environmental factors that impact boys' motivation and academic performance. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Honourable Mention: A Christmas to Remember
Shanyce Morris, a student at Somersfield Academy, received an honourable mention in the under-13 category of the RG Christmas Story competition. Her imaginative storytelling and creativity impressed the judges. Read her festive tale, filled with holiday magic and on the spirit of Christmas.
Tanzania trip offered Somersfield’s Asha Caisey an opportunity to learn about Africa and the African diaspora's history
Somersfield’s Asha Caisey attended the African Diaspora Heritage Trail Youth Summit in Tanzania. She explored her heritage, met Tanzania’s Minister of Culture, visited Zanzibar’s slave trade sites & reflected on cultural confidence, history, & freedom.
Somersfield Student Selected to Attend African Diaspora Heritage Trail Conference
Somersfield student Asha Caisey has been selected to attend the International African Diaspora Heritage Trail conference in Tanzania. This unique experience will deepen her understanding of African diaspora history & culture, while enhancing her leadership skills & global perspective.
Somersfield Academy Unveils Community Mosaic for Bermuda’s 400th Anniversary
As part of Bermuda's 400th anniversary celebrations, Somersfield Academy created a community mosaic titled A Tribute to Bermuda. Designed by art teacher Kendra Earls, the project involved students, parents, staff, and local companies. Over 75 volunteers, led by Earls and craftsman Jonathan Trott, completed the piece in two months. Funds were raised during the school’s spring fair, and the mosaic was unveiled on September 25.

Jim Christopher, the new head of Somersfield Academy, supports the Government's adoption of the Cambridge curriculum, believing it will enhance education standards. He emphasises the importance of public education, noting that private schools thrive when public systems are robust. With a history in Canadian education, Dr. Christopher is keen on ensuring Somersfield remains accessible and diverse, focusing on inclusivity, technology, and new programmes.
Somersfield Academy Hosts BIFF Film Camps: A Creative Hub for Aspiring Teen Filmmakers
Somersfield Academy hosts the Bermuda International Film Festival's Film Academy summer camps, where teens aged 14-16 learn filmmaking skills. The campus serves as the location for the boot camp, with students writing, directing, and shooting their own films on-site. The program provides hands-on experience in acting, scriptwriting, and technical aspects of filmmaking, fostering creativity and collaboration.
End of term fun featured kites, scavenger hunt and quiz
On the last day of the second term at Somersfield Academy, MYP students enjoyed a special Fun Day packed with activities. The day began with a school-wide scavenger hunt, where students raced to solve riddles and find answers posted around the school. They then gathered materials for kite-making, participated in a general knowledge quiz, and tackled various challenges. The day concluded with flying Bermuda kites and a countdown to the term's end.
