Somersfield Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards 2024 Nominees

This year, the BSSF and the Denton Hurdle Committee are honoured to present their award for the top student-athlete, both male and female, in their final year of primary, middle, and high school. Each school on the island is invited to nominate their ambassador athletes. Nominees were selected based on their representation on Somersfield school sports teams, as well as their sportsmanship, leadership, and talent in sports.

The Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards is the highlight of the BSSF calendar, recognising Bermuda’s finest primary, middle, and senior school student-athletes. Each school is allowed to nominate one boy and one girl for the award who are in their final year of primary, middle, or senior school. The final selected nominees from every school will receive a certificate and medal of recognition at the ceremony. Then a top male and female winner and honourable mentions will be named in each gender for primary, middle, and senior school.

The awards were introduced in 1986 to honour the late Denton Hurdle. Hurdle was a keen sportsman who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College, and Dalhousie University. After completing his physical education degree, he went on to teach at Warwick Academy. He was an avid sportsman who excelled in soccer, cricket, and volleyball, but his first love was rugby. He captained the Teachers Rugby Football Club and was a regular member of the Bermuda National Team.

The nominees selected by their school must demonstrate the attributes Hurdle valued, active participation, leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, dedication, cooperation, and positive attitudes in school. Nominees should also be good scholar-athletes and role models.

We would like to congratulate all our shortlisted nominees: Anna Green, Evelyn Fahy, Freida Valli, Hugo Adams, James Wallace, Gabriella Cechini, Joseph Cechini, Satya Darrell, and Enrique Mendes.

It was a very difficult decision, as all the shortlisted nominees are exceptional athletes. They each exhibit excellent sportsmanship, consistently striving not only to better themselves but also to encourage and uplift their peers. These students are dedicated, regularly stepping out of their comfort zones and embracing challenges with determination and resilience. Their commitment to hard work, both individually and as team players, exemplifies the core values we aim to instill in our student-athletes. Each nominee has proven themselves to be a role model, demonstrating perseverance, leadership, and a true passion for sports.

Congratulations to our selected nominees for 2024
