Honouring a Champion of Service: Sharlene Young
Linda Parker, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Hamilton, presented Sharlene Young with a Community Service Award.
At Somersfield Academy, we believe that education goes far beyond the classroom—it is also about nurturing compassion, responsibility, and a lifelong commitment to community. Few exemplify this more than our own biology teacher, Ms. Sharlene Young, whose dedication to service learning has recently earned her well-deserved recognition from Rotary International.
For many years, Ms. Young has worked with our M5 and Diploma Programme students, guiding them in developing practical, meaningful skills through a variety of service initiatives. From environmental efforts such as nature reserve and beach cleanups, to tree planting and food donations to Christ Church, Ms. Young ensures that students not only understand the importance of service but actively participate in it.
One longstanding tradition involves organising annual food hamper drives. These hampers are placed in classrooms throughout the school, allowing every student at Somersfield to contribute and understand the impact of collective giving. Beyond this, students engage in a wide range of activities including gardening, fundraising, assisting teachers by preparing materials, and keeping our campus vibrant and welcoming by maintaining communal spaces.
Among the many initiatives she organises, one major project stands out: the students’ collaboration with the charity HOME. Under Ms. Young’s guidance, students clean and organise rooms, tend to the vegetable garden, and decorate the premises—particularly during the Christmas season—to bring joy and comfort to the residents.
Ms. Young’s impact, however, goes beyond inspiring students. She is a catalyst for broader community engagement, encouraging her colleagues and peers to take part in meaningful service. Her commitment to the annual Relay for Life event is just one example of how she leads by example, devoting her time and energy in support of causes close to her heart.
Her dedication also perfectly reflects the 4-way test for Rotary International:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Ms. Young lives the principles of connection, empathy, and action every day through her leadership. She not only strengthens our school’s sense of community but also inspires a lasting commitment to service in the hearts of our students.
We are proud to celebrate Ms. Sharlene Young and grateful for the countless ways she continues to impact lives within and beyond Somersfield.
