How Monster Trucks, Transformers, and Student Voice Built Somersfield’s Most Epic Co-Curricular Ever

Student voice isn’t just something we talk about — it’s something we build with.

Each Friday afternoon, the school comes alive with our Co-curricular Activities (CCA) programme. It’s a time when students of all ages step away from their usual routines and dive into new experiences. From art to robotics, environmental activism to yoga, our CCAs are designed around what students are curious about, passionate about, and eager to explore.

This year, something extraordinary happened.

It started with a simple feedback form in Children’s House (our Montessori early years division). One student wrote that they would love a Monster Truck co-curricular. Enter Emma Moran-Lee, our Director of Activities — the master of making dreams come true. And just like that, the Monster Trucks and Transformers Co-curricular was born.

When Emma sent out the call to the Somersfield community, the response was incredible. Families raided garages, attics, and toy boxes, donating over 100 monster trucks and Transformers. Some came lovingly worn, others still in their original packaging — all arrived with stories and excitement.

By the time sign-ups closed, Monster Trucks and Transformers wasn’t just full — it became the most subscribed co-curricular in Somersfield’s history.

But this wasn’t just about playing with toys (though there was plenty of that too!). It became a project in student leadership and community spirit.

At Somersfield, we believe great ideas can come from anywhere — especially from the minds of our youngest learners.

And this time, we built something unforgettable from one simple question: What would YOU like to do?
