Remembering Reid Kempe: Annual Memorial Race Pays Tribute to a Multifaceted Bermudian Icon
The Reid Kempe Memorial Race stands as an annual tribute to a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on the Somersfield community. Edwin James “Reid” Kempe, a poet, musician, teacher, marketer, Olympic sailor, and boat restorer, passed away in August 2015 after a courageous six-month battle with cancer. Remembered not only for his diverse talents but also as a devoted family man survived by his wife Lucia and three children—Justin, Zoe, and Jonathan. Reid Kempe's legacy lives on through this poignant event.
Reid Kempe was an avid seaman. He competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games sailing in the Tornado class. He also tackled significant boat projects, building the luxury catamaran Zara along with sons in South Africa and his 24-year restoration of the 1926 classic yacht Chicane in Dockyard. As a Somersfield educator, Kempe emphasised the importance of English, humanities, and Bermudian history—a subject close to his heart. He was a staunch advocate for Bermuda's natural environment. His involvement in the Bermuda National Trust documentary, "Which Way Bermuda?" and his pivotal role in environmentalist Stuart Hayward's election campaign in 1988 showcased his commitment to the island's welfare. Reid Kempe was known as a perpetual learner and believed in making a difference in this world.
To honour his dynamic contributions, the whole school takes part in an annual Reid Kempe Memorial Race. The top eight boys and girls emerging from this race have the distinct honour of representing Somersfield at the Interschool Cross Country Competition, ensuring that Reid Kempe's legacy continues to inspire the younger generations to reach new heights.
