Celebrating Black History Month and JEDI Initiatives at Somersfield

Dear Somersfield Community,

As we embark on the month of February, we are thrilled to share with you the exciting lineup of events. Initiatives and (as well as a few special surprise guests) planned to celebrate Black History Month and promote Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) within our school community. This annual observance provides us with a valuable opportunity to honor the contributions and achievements of Black individuals, both locally and globally, while also fostering understanding and appreciation for diversity in all its forms.

Black History Month Assembly: We kick off our celebrations with a special Black History Month Assembly on February 5th for our Primary students and on February 19th for our Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) students. Our assembly will feature an engaging presentation celebrating the rich history and culture of Black Bermudians in the arts, as well as highlighting the accomplishments of famous Black inventors and change-makers.

National Day of Racial Healing/CURB Event: On February 6th, in collaboration with Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB), we will observe the National Day of Racial Healing with a special event focused on promoting dialogue, understanding, and healing within our community. This event will provide an opportunity for meaningful reflection and action as we work towards a more just and inclusive society.

Internet Scavenger Hunt: Throughout the month, students from across the school will participate in an exciting Internet Scavenger Hunt, exploring the rich history and achievements of Black individuals and communities around the world. This interactive activity will challenge students to learn and discover while celebrating Black history and culture in a fun and engaging way.

Famous Black Inventors/Change Makers: Our Primary and Children's House students will engage in activities focused on learning about famous Black inventors and change-makers. Through hands-on projects, storytelling and discussions, students will have the opportunity to explore the remarkable contributions of individuals who have shaped history and made lasting contributions to our society.

Black History Show and Tell: During the week of February 26th, our Children's House and Primary classrooms, students will participate in Black History Show and Tell sessions, where they will have the opportunity to share and learn about important figures, events, and cultural traditions related to Black history and heritage. These sessions will promote dialogue, creativity, and mutual respect among our youngest learners. Students will bring an item, photo, etc. to “show and tell” related to the person they choose.

Bermuda College Film/Discussion: Select MYP and DP students will have the opportunity to participate in a film screening and discussion hosted by Bermuda College, focusing on the life and legacy of Madame CJ Walker, a trailblazing entrepreneur and philanthropist.
