Honouring Bermudian Activists: Somersfield Students Celebrate MLK's Legacy

January 20, 2025 — A group of Somersfield Academy students, accompanied by Ms. Tanisha Edwards, Director of Student Life, attended the Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at City Hall. This event served as a platform to reflect on Dr. King's enduring legacy and to celebrate individuals and groups who embody his principles of justice, equity, and nonviolent advocacy.

The ceremony, organised by Imagine Bermuda, paid tribute to those who have significantly contributed to the betterment of Bermudian society: late educator Edwin Skinner, union stalwart Helena “Molly” Burgess, and the Peace Collective, represented by former Somersfield teacher Maha Turner.

The honourees’ story resonated deeply with the values Dr. King stood for. Mr. Skinner’s pioneering efforts to educate Black students during segregation exemplified courage and humanity. Ms. Burgess’s decades of advocacy for workers’ rights demonstrated an unwavering commitment to justice. The Peace Collective’s response to the Israel-Hamas conflict highlighted the importance of nonviolent action and global awareness—values that align closely with Dr. King’s philosophy.

The Somersfield Academy students—Marc Rajeh ‘26, Zarah Siddiqi ‘26, Samantha Binega-Northcott ‘26, and Kiara Weeks-George ‘26 presence reflected the school’s commitment to nurturing socially conscious individuals who are equipped to make meaningful contributions to their communities. These students joined peers from Saltus Grammar School, Warwick Academy, and the Pauulu Heritage Institute in recognising the importance of standing against injustice and fostering peace.

By participating in this meaningful event, Somersfield Academy continues to exemplify its dedication to nurturing a diverse, inclusive, and globally minded community. Through their active engagement, the students and faculty uphold the values of empathy, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility that are central to the school’s vision and the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile.

Dr. King’s message remains timeless, and the participation of Somersfield Academy’s students demonstrates that his dream of equality, justice, and peace is alive and well in Bermuda.
