Somersfield Academy Launches Bermuda’s First Senior School Coed Badminton League

In an exciting development for student athletics in Bermuda, Somersfield Academy has introduced a senior school coed badminton league, marking the first of its kind on the island. This initiative aims to increase participation and provide more playing opportunities for students from various schools across Bermuda.

The inaugural round of the league featured teams from Somersfield, Berkeley Institute, Saltus Grammar School, and Warwick Academy. Somersfield's first team is off to a fantastic start, currently sitting at the top of the league table after winning both their matches against Warwick’s first and second teams, with a score of 3-2 in each. The winning team consists of Dezirae Darrell, Paige Lindo, Matthew Troake, Max Wallace, and Kieran Foster.

Somersfield's second team also performed admirably, securing a 3-2 victory over Saltus, while narrowly losing to Warwick’s second team, with two matches going to very close scores of 22-24 and 19-21. Team members include Cora DeSilva, Sydney Troake, Aaron Lee, Brooklyn Barnett, and Max DeCouto.

The success wasn’t limited to Somersfield's teams alone, as players representing other schools also shone. Hayleigh Cherry and Annabel Olutiola won their girls' doubles match against the BHS DP2 pair. Meanwhile, Rose Paulos and Taliah Wade put up a valiant effort against Cora and Sydney, narrowly losing 20-22. Additionally, Kenzie Lawrence partnered with Chloe from Warwick to secure a victory in their girls’ doubles match against BHS.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the staff and parents who came to support the players. Congratulations to all athletes on their impressive performances! Training will continue until the next round on January 14.

Special thanks to Colton Kearns, JitHom Liew, and James Bigley for their contributions in scoring and managing the tournament effectively.
