Grub Day Spotlight: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda

For this months Grub Day, we are welcoming  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda (BBBS), an organisation that focuses on supporting young people through positive mentoring relationships.

BBBS is a great fit for our Somersfield community because their work reflects many of the values we try to live by every day. At Somersfield, we believe in respect, empathy, kindness, inclusion, and building strong relationships. BBBS puts these same values into action by connecting young people with mentors who listen to them, encourage them, and help them recognise their own potential.

It is important for charities like BBBS to come into schools because it gives students the opportunity to learn directly from organisations that are making a difference in our community. These visits can help us discover resources and opportunities that we may not know about, learn about different ways we can support others, and understand how the values we practise at school can be used in the wider world. It also reminds us that we are part of a larger community and that we all have the ability to make a positive difference in someone else's life.

In addition it connects to this month's focus of being a Peacekeeper, and being a Peacekeeper is about more than simply avoiding conflict. It means listening to others, showing empathy, including people, and helping to create a community where everyone feels valued and supported. These are all important parts of mentoring and are at the heart of what BBBS does.

We will also be recognising International Day of Peace later this month. BBBS reminds us that peace can start with something as simple as one positive relationship. When we choose to listen, support, encourage, and care for others, we help create a more peaceful community.

So, as we hear from Big Brothers Big Sisters today, we encourage everyone to think about one question: How can I be a Peacekeeper and make someone else feel supported, included, and valued?
