International Day of Peace: Peace Starts With Us

Friday, September 18, 2026 — The Somersfield Academy community came together for our annual International Day of Peace Ceremony. Held at the Peace Pole, the ceremony brought our whole school together for a time of reflection on the importance of peace and the role each of us can play in creating a more peaceful community.

The ceremony also marked the introduction of our 2026–27 Student Leadership Council, whose members shared reflections on what peace means and why it matters.

At Somersfield, peace education is woven into our Montessori and International Baccalaureate programmes. Maria Montessori recognised the important role education plays in building peace. The IB similarly places intercultural understanding, respect and responsible action at the heart of its educational philosophy.

These principles connect closely with Somersfield’s mission to inspire socially conscious, independent thinkers. While global peace can feel like a distant and complex goal, it also begins with the choices we make every day.

Our annual ceremony gives students and staff a chance to pause and reflect on these ideas together. It is a reminder that peace is not simply something we hope for in the wider world. It is something we can practise in our classrooms, our relationships and our community.

Peace starts with us.
