Somersfield Celebrates Strong Academic Results Across Continuum
September 11, 2026 — Somersfield Academy is delighted to celebrate another year of strong academic achievement across our Montessori and International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. This year’s results reflect the hard work of our students, as well as the commitment and expertise of our teachers right across the school.
Canadian Achievement Test (CAT) Results
The Canadian Achievement Test (CAT) is a standardised assessment used to measure student achievement in key academic areas, including reading, vocabulary and mathematics, against Canadian grade-level expectations. Our Primary students have continued to build strong foundations in these key areas.
Every class that participated in this year’s testing performed at or above the expected Canadian grade level, with three-quarters of classes performing at the equivalent of two or more years ahead of their current grade.
These results show the foundations being established from the earliest years, while also demonstrating our students’ growing confidence as independent learners and problem-solvers.
Janice Outerbridge, Head of Primary Division said: “We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made this year. It is wonderful to see students developing the skills and independence they need to take on increasingly complex challenges as they move through the school continuum.”
Middle Years Programme E-Assessments
Somersfield is the only school on the island to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and its students have also achieved strong results, showing their ability to apply their learning in meaningful ways.
Students achieved an average MYP score of 38 points, with the highest individual result reaching 47 points. The cohort’s average grade also increased significantly, from 4.31 in 2025 to 4.76 in 2026.
Students performed particularly strongly in English, French, History, Mathematics and the Personal Project, with results above international averages in a number of areas.
Cathy Schlei, IB Coordinator, said: “Our MYP e-Assessment show the commitment and academic ability of the students who chose to participate this year. As we move to our new optional e-Assessment model, we are pleased that students who want the opportunity to earn externally accredited MYP grades can continue to do so. At the same time, our broader approach to M5 assessment will allow us to place an even stronger focus on preparing students for the rigour and expectations of the IB Diploma Programme. What remains unchanged is our commitment to the depth of learning, critical thinking and independence that are central to an IB education.”
Diploma Programme
Our IB Diploma Programme students have continued this strong academic journey, with 14 of 16 Diploma candidates earning the full IB Diploma, representing an 87.5% success rate compared with a global average of 82.6%.
Students who earned the Diploma achieved an average of 31 points, with the highest individual result reaching an impressive 39 points.
IB Diploma Programme students are required to balance demanding academic coursework with independent research, critical thinking and a range of other commitments.
Charlie Judd, Head of Secondary said: “These results are a tremendous achievement for our DP students. Beyond the results, our students have shown that they have the confidence to think critically, work independently and persevere through demanding challenges, qualities that will serve them well post-graduation.”
While examination results are an important measure of achievement, at Somersfield the belief is that education is about much more than grades.
From the Montessori years through to the IB Diploma Programme, students are encouraged to think independently and explore their interests and take ownership of their learning. Achievements this year demonstrate what is possible when high expectations are combined with a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
