Secondary Summer Reading 2026
The school year may be winding down, but the learning journey doesn't have to stop! This week, students attended an assembly about summer reading.
There are two parts to summer reading (including a visiting author):
Watch video: Ms. Rolph takes you through the Secondary Summer Reading opportunities.
Whole division read of the novel All Thirteen by Christina Soontornvat. The author is visiting us in September, and everyone can benefit from her visit.
Book summary: On June 23, 2018, twelve young players of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach enter a cave in northern Thailand seeking an afternoon's adventure. But when they turn to leave, rising floodwaters block their path out. The boys are trapped! Before long, news of the missing team spreads, launching a seventeen-day rescue operation involving thousands of rescuers from around the globe. As the world sits vigil, people begin to wonder: how long can a group of ordinary kids survive in complete darkness, with no food or clean water? Combining firsthand interviews of rescue workers with in-depth science and details of the region's culture and religion, author Christina Soontornvat--shows how both the complex engineering operation above ground and the mental struggles of the thirteen young people below proved critical in the life-or-death mission.
2. Teacher Book Clubs (everyone M1 and up): Students are asked to read one additional book over the summer. See the gallery of choices:
Upon returning to school in September, students will break into book clubs of 10-15 for culminating activities to kick off the school year and celebrate summer reading!
Each child is welcome to read as many books as they want this summer (and we certainly hope that they do). Students must commit to reading at least one book from this list. Once you have reviewed the book choices gallery, please select a title on Sign Up Genius before Friday, June 12.
Rewards: Students who tackle more books will receive prizes—three or more books (including All Thirteen) earns a grub day certificate and four or more books earns an invitation to the dessert party in September.
Record your books in your Summer Reading Log.
Where to purchase books: Local stores have been given a list and will have books in stock soon or you can buy from bookstores abroad or online for e-readers.
Happy Reading!
