Somersfield Middle School Netball Team Crowned Bermuda Champions!

November 27, 2024 — Somersfield Academy’s Middle School Netball team won the tournament today!

The team started off with a strong win against Warwick Academy 7-2. Then they beat Francis Patton to secure a place in the semifinal. The girls lost a tight game to Dellwood 8-6 in the final group game; however they progressed to the semifinals as 2nd in the group.

In the semifinal they played the winners of the other group Saltus, winning 7-4.

They went on to play BHS in the final and narrowly won 6-5 to be crowned Middle School Netball champions. Somersfield is now the Middle School and U16 Netball Champions of Bermuda!

In defense, GK Leilani Carpol used her height to great effect grabbing lots of rebounds and blocking shots. GD Riley Jones was all over the court tipping and intercepting passes. M2 Aniah Tucker was an excellent GD as well, Aniah used her speed and grit to defend players taller than her. Coach Debre Evans made a genius call to move Zarah Fahy to WD where she used her length and athleticism to shut down the opposition. Captain Emily Paulos was inspirational playing C where she pushed through exhaustion and a headache to secure the win against Saltus. Sienna Harper shone in the final, playing an excellent second half at C. WAs Zoei Burgess and Yhari Goater-Jones did a great job channelling and getting the ball to the Goalers in the circle. M2 Cali Atcheson-Greenidge scored some great goals in GA. Debre also decided to move Milena Millett to GA where she formed an unstoppable partnership to GS M1 Freida Valli.

The girls should be very proud of the hard work they put in today and all season. They fought through adversity, supported each other and displayed wonderful teamwork and sportsmanship. They took risks playing new positions and reflected on their performances in each game to improve. They were true IB learners!

A huge congratulations to our student coaches Dezirae Darrell, Naomi Crofton, Taliah Wade and Nishika Bisht who have formed a special relationship with the team. They have made a huge impact on the team in their lunchtime training sessions and during the games.

The PE department in secondary and primary have done an excellent job instilling the fundamentals of netball in the students.

Volunteer coach Debre Evans's expertise has been invaluable this season, she has made a huge impact on the team, as evidenced by some of the position switches made by the girls today.

Thank you to new teachers Cathrina Aguilar and Allison Farrell for supporting the team and being a positive presence for the students.

The Somersfield Sharks are becoming a force to be reckoned with in Bermuda School Sports!
