LGBTQ+ history is something that we annually celebrate. It recognises history, experiences, achievements and contributions that have come from the LGBTQ+ community. It also raises the opportunity to spread awareness about challenges that this community has faced and has to face in their day to day lives.
By talking about this, it highlights the diverse community of people who have provide to society in fields such as education, science, sports, politics and human rights. LGBTQ+ History encourages people to learn more about historical events and movements that have helped equality and inclusion thrive.
By learning about the past, we can better understand and appreciate the advancement that has been made while also noticing areas where acceptance are continuing to be important goals.
LGBTQ+ History also has a connection to Bermuda. Communities and organisations like OUTBermuda openly support the LGBTQ+ community through support, advocacy, youth programs. Learning about LGBTQ+ history helps us to better understand that diversity is a present and active thing within our island.
This matters to Jr. Jedi because it helps us to better understand perspectives. It encourages to break away from stereotypes, recognises traditions and contributions from the LGBTQ+ individuals, and help create a community within our school where everybody feels welcome, respected, and included. It connects us with our IB Learner Profile: Open-mindedness.
Throughout the year, Jr. Jedi may recognise LGBTQ+ history through classroom discussions, awareness activities and displays. Students can participate by taking it into their own hands to learn about LGTBQ+ historical figures, engaging in respectful conversations and thinking about how they can contribute to a more inclusive community.
How families can also help with more inclusivity in their home is conversation starters.
They can ask:
What does inclusivity look like in our school and community?
How can you, as a person, challenge stereotypes and assumptions?
How can we make everyone feel accepted, included and respected?
And so much more.
While learning about LGBTQ+ History, students are heavily encouraged to learn from different perspectives and speak out against discrimination if the see it. One simple change in families can take is to learn about LGBTQ+ historical figures and discuss what they learned. Students can also take action into their own hands and learn more about organisations like OUTBermuda and promote the idea of inclusion and respect in Bermuda.
At Somersfield, JR. JEDI helps to create a community where everyone feels included, respected, heard and valued. By learning about LGBTQ+ History, it reminds us that diversity not only strengthens our school but helps make a wider community. Thank you to the students and the families that help make that happen.
