Champions on the Track: Highlights from the U13 and O13 Cross Country

The U13 and O13 Cross Country took place on Tuesday, February 6 on a cool and dreary day at the arboretum.

Kicking things off were the U13 Girls. M1 Elena Bortoli had an extremely impressive performance racing against M2s and finishing 5th. The rest of the team included Daisy Langley, Kate Pursell, Helena Bailie, Mia DaPonte, McKenna RedCliffe, Zarah Fahy and Sienna Harper.

The U13 Boys were the most consistent of all the teams placing 3rd overall amongst all of the schools. Caelan Cabral led the team with 8th place, followed closely by Jarred Jones, Cairo Burgess, Owen Stewart, Jack Bull, Austin Murphy, Brenna Watkins and Rayyan Haffar.

In the O13 Girls race, Gabby Cechini took off like a rocket right from the start and didn’t look back. With each lap she pulled further ahead, and as she came to the finish line she nearly took out another school’s teacher who was walking across in front of the finish line as no one was expecting anyone to be finished so soon! The rest of the O13 team consisted of Hayleigh Cherry, Leyla Crews, Kate Allington, Maddie Bigley, Lola Reape, Sydney Troake and Ysa White.

The O13 Boys finished out the day. On the first lap Joey Cechini was neck and neck with his fierce rival Zydon Furbert from Warwick Academy, who had beaten him in the front street mile in January. However, by the second lap Joey had pulled clear of the field and in the end ran home to a comfortable victory to complete a Cechini clean sweep. Also on the O13 Boys team were Micah Doran, Seb White, Henry Fields, Aaron Lee, Dash Irvine, and Grayson Tavares. Avyukt Jain was also selected to compete but unfortunately was sick on the day.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our volunteer parents Laurie Orchard and Vivienne Lochhead who have been running our after school cross country team training. They prepared the students mentally and physically with words of wisdom and encouragement as well as expert warm ups.
