The Reid Kempe Memorial Race 2025
The Reid Kempe Memorial Race is a cherished annual event at Somersfield Academy, held to honour the life and legacy of Edwin James “Reid” Kempe. Reid, a former teacher at the school, Olympic sailor, poet, musician, and passionate advocate for Bermuda’s environment, passed away in August 2015 after a battle with cancer. He is remembered not only for his diverse talents but also for his dedication to family, education, and his community.
This year marked a special milestone as the event became a whole-school tradition for the first time. Before the race began, students and staff from Children’s House up to the Diploma Programme took part in a quiet memorial walk, reflecting on Reid’s contributions to Somersfield and the values he upheld. It was a powerful moment of unity, setting a meaningful tone for the day ahead.
Despite a rainy forecast, the skies cleared just in time for the race, though the route remained muddy from earlier showers. The challenging terrain—winding through the school field, past the squash club, along the railway trail, and back to campus—tested the runners' endurance. However, the break in the rain gave students the perfect opportunity to push forward, demonstrating resilience and school spirit throughout the event.
A week later, during Friday’s assembly, awards were presented to the top finishers, recognising their outstanding performances.
