Building Futures: Empowering Students through LEGO Design and Technical Skills

Students in M2 have been working to create their own LEGO kits for children ages 9+ in their Design class. They researched the interests of their peers and analysed the work of professions to inspire their own creations. As part of this process, students have been learning to read and create technical drawings, using these to create 3D models in OnShape, a cloud-based professional modelling program.

Some students have been learning to create complex LEGO pieces, which has involved learning to take accurate measurements with a set of vernier callipers and recreate these dimensions in their models. Several students have brought in sample Lego pieces from home to help ensure the accuracy of their models.

To support this unit and other projects in future years, the Somersfield Design department is seeking donations of old Lego. These will be used to teach these technical skills to students along with as a resource for brainstorming projects and ideas. Please reach out to either Kim Hogg (khogg@somersfield.bm) or Kim Owens (kowens@somersfield.bm) if you wish to make a Lego donation.
