Somersfield Academy Student Nasir Simmons Wins Commissioner for the Day Contest
October 16, 2012 — Students from six different schools were the Commissioner for the Day after being selected for their essays and art. Each of the nine winning students met with Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva and his senior command team. The junior and senior school students spoke with the officers in a round-table discussion before joining the primary school winners for a ride on a marine unit vessel. All the winners and the families also enjoyed lunch with members of the police service senior command.
A police spokesman said: “This year’s Police Week theme is ‘Building Partnerships for a Safer Community’ and the primary school students were asked to produce police-related artwork, while the middle and senior school students were asked to write a short essay.” The short essay topic for the middle school students was: “If I were Commissioner I would …” while the short essay topic for the senior school students was: “How can the Bermuda Police Service build partnerships within the community?”
The winning student in each category took home an iPad, while second and third place entrants were to win iPods. Because only one middle school student, 12-year-old Somersfield Academy student Nasir Simmons, entered the competition, additional prize winners were selected from the senior and primary schools, winning iPods.
Seventeen-year-old CedarBridge Academy student Patrick Lee came first in the senior school category, followed by China Richardson, 17, Allanna Bean, 16, and Jahlae Albouy, 16, all from Berkeley Institute. In the primary school category, nine-year-old Harrington Sound Primary student Cree Dunn took the first prize. Eight-year-old Miquan O’Brian, six-year-old Allura Cupidore-Correia, and ten-year-old Enoch Richardson came second, third, and fourth respectively.
The spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service would like to congratulate these young people in particular, and all the students who entered, for their impressive submissions.”
