Schools take part in Shakespeare festival
October 15, 2012 — The Bermuda Shakespeare Schools Festival kicks off tonight at The Berkeley Institute, celebrating its annual tradition of high school performances of Shakespearean plays. This year's festival features The Bermuda High School performing Twelfth Night and Somersfield Academy presenting The Tempest.
Charlie Judd, English teacher at Somersfield Academy, highlights the unique experience of staging The Tempest, inspired by Bermuda's accidental settlement in 1609. He notes that while the play initially felt unconventional to students, its distinctive elements eventually resonated with them. The festival is described as a collaborative effort rather than a competition, fostering camaraderie among participating schools.
Student Tess Spencer, 15, who plays Ariel, enjoyed the playful Bermuda-themed adaptation of the play. Camilla Papadopoulo, 15, portraying Prospero, finds the challenging role rewarding and an excellent experience. Shamar Morris, 15, returning for his second festival, values the opportunity to balance his interest in drama with his career aspirations in actuarial science.
The festival continues with performances from Saltus Grammar School and CedarBridge Academy tomorrow, and The Berkeley Institute and Warwick Academy on Wednesday. Tickets are available for $10 at participating schools or the Bermuda Bookstore.
