Somersfield Girls Take Semi-Final to Sudden Death in Semi-final Thriller

Somersfield vs. Saltus – Tuesday, December 9 at Somersfield

The Somersfield Primary Girls football team delivered an outstanding performance in their semi-final match against Saltus on Tuesday, December 9th, despite missing a few of their regular team members who were out sick.

Somersfield came out strong from the very first whistle, with Myla Desjardins scoring in the opening minute. Saltus responded quickly with a goal of their own, showing they were ready for a tough contest.

Our girls continued to push forward with determination. Under the guidance of Coach Rychus, Somersfield regained momentum with two more goals—one from Yuna Gelhar and another from Myla. Madison Ramsay played exceptionally well in goal, making several important saves to keep us ahead. Saltus, however, managed to score again before halftime, keeping the match tightly contested.

Following a motivating halftime talk from Coach Rychus, the team returned to the field with renewed energy. They battled hard throughout the second half, but Saltus found a late equaliser, sending the match to a 3–3 draw at full time.

Penalty kicks would decide the match. Myla bravely stepped into goal and made some impressive saves during the shootout. Unfortunately, Saltus claimed victory in sudden-death penalties.

Although the result was not in our favour, we are incredibly proud of our girls and the heart, resilience, and teamwork they displayed until the final kick. Their performance was admirable, especially with several teammates missing.

A special thank-you goes to Coach Rychus, the LB Football coaches, and Amy Winstanley—Children’s House and Primary PE teacher—who helped coach and managed the team throughout the season. Their support, commitment, and encouragement made a tremendous impact on the players. We also extend our thanks to the parents who came out to cheer on the girls.

We wish Saltus the best of luck as they move on to the finals.
