Strong Performances Across Boys and Girls at the BSSF Rugby Tournament
February 26, 2026 — Fifty boys and girls from M1, M2 and M3 participated in the BSSF rugby tournament.
Facing more experienced opposition, both of our M2/M3 boys teams won a game. Their tackling technique and support play got better and better with each game. Unfortunately, they both just missed out on the semi-final qualification.
Our M1 boys, coached by Anthony "Church" Cupidore, also made great strides throughout the day. Due to a couple of late withdrawals, they had no subs and even had to play one game with only six players!
It takes a lot of bravery and guts to step on a rugby field, tackle other boys and get tackled, so I am very proud of all the boys today. They showed a lot of toughness, grit and sportsmanship!
We had two girls teams in the tag tournament and both were very competitive. Unfortunately, the "Hammerhead Sharks" did not qualify for the semifinals, despite winning a game. However, the "Great White Sharks" topped their group to earn a showdown against BHS in the semi-final. Anya-Aelishe showed great leadership throughout the day, passing on her rugby knowledge to the younger students. Aniah Tucker flew down the wing all day long to be the top try scorer. Della Masters, Evelyn Fahy, Emma Osborne and Alexa Lemay-Arias, linked up well with their teammates to pass the ball into space and score some tries themselves. M1s Eva Desjardins, Charlotte Henderson and Sydney Peixoto did not look out of place up against M3 girls. In a tightly contested semi-final the sharks took a bite out of the dragons to win by two tries.
In the final they faced the Warwick Academy bears. It was a back-and-forth game, with both teams trading blows like a heavy weight fight. The score was tied 3-3 at half time. In the second half, the sharks stepped up their defense and managed to force the bears into some errors which they then capitalized on. In the closing minutes, Somersfield took the lead but Warwick still had a chance to tie it. The girls were determined to not let Warwick score and after forcing another Warwick turnover they managed to speed down the field and score what proved to be the match winning try.
What is incredible is that this group of girls has won the hockey, netball and rugby this year! They are probably the winningest group of Somersfield students in history!
A huge thank you to Emma, Da-Von, and Church for coaching our teams as well as the parents who came out to support. Please congratulate all of the students when you see them.
