Somersfield Students Explore Science & Nature at Nonsuch Island Camp

June 24, 2013 — Teens from CedarBridge Academy, Saltus and Somersfield with a keen interest in science and the environment were treated to a nature tour of Nonsuch Island.

The annual Nonsuch Island Natural History Camp was attended by 11 teenagers courtesy of the Bermuda Audubon Society and the Bermuda Zoological Society. The programme is supported by the Department of Conservation Services and funded by Catlin Insurance, PartnerRe and the Garden Club of Bermuda.

The camp for students aged 15 to 18 participating in the weeklong residential camp spend their days on field trips and evenings listening to talks by local scientists and experts on topics ranging from Bermuda’s geology to the Sargasso Sea.

College-level field and lab work is part of the course. Environmental learning this year includes field trips to Walsingham Nature Reserve, Spittal Pond and coastal dunes.

Snorkelling and data collection at North Rock and Harrington Sound is also included, along with a conservation project on Nonsuch Isalnd with Conservation Officer Jeremy Madeiros.
