Toby Gibbons Shaves Head to Support St Baldrick’s Cancer Fundraiser

March 10, 2011 — Toby Gibbons, a P4 student at Somersfield Academy, is preparing to have his head shaved for the St Baldrick’s fundraiser on March 18. This marks the first of a weekly series chronicling his journey.

“This is the third time I’ve participated in St Baldrick’s. The first time was in 2009 when my mum wanted to do it. I didn’t want her to shave her head, so I offered to do it instead. But after she showed me the St Baldrick’s website and explained how it raises money for sick children, I understood why she was so determined. In the end, my mum, dad, and I all shaved our heads, raising almost $40,000, which was amazing!”

“Last year, I took part on my own. I set a goal of $1,000 and ended up raising $4,173, which made me really happy. This year, I set the same goal, but someone donated $1,000 on the first day! So I increased my goal to $4,000, and so far, I’ve raised $3,505.”

“I like shaving my head because it helps children with cancer. I feel very lucky that neither I nor anyone in my family has cancer, and I’m glad to support those who aren’t as fortunate.”
