Statement from the Senior Pedagogical Team on MYP e-Assessment
Dear Somersfield Family,
We are writing to share an important strategic decision regarding assessment in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) at the M5 level.
Beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, Somersfield Academy will adopt a hybrid approach to M5 assessment, with a strengthened focus on ensuring a highly effective academic continuum between MYP 5 and the IB Diploma Programme. As part of this shift, the school will no longer pursue full MYP certification for all students. MYP e-Assessment will remain available as an option for those who wish to obtain externally accredited grades in specific subjects.
This decision follows extensive consultation across our community, including input from alumni, current and past families, faculty, the Board, and guidance counsellors at both the secondary and tertiary levels. In addition, our review of global practice indicates that only a small proportion of MYP schools pursue universal certification, with many choosing instead to prioritise closer alignment between the taught, written, and assessed curriculum in MYP 4 and 5 and the IB Diploma Programme.
In place of MYP certification and e-Assessment, M5 students will undertake formal examinations designed to reflect the rigour and structure of IB Diploma examination sessions. This approach will better prepare students for the expectations of the Diploma Programme while supporting a more cohesive and aligned assessment experience across the final years of secondary school.
We believe this evolution in practice strengthens academic preparation and student readiness, while remaining grounded in the core principles of an IB education. Further details, including an information session and supporting materials for current M4 students and families, will be shared shortly to guide you through this transition.
Sincerely,
Senior Leadership Team
