Strategic Evolution of IB MYP e-Assessment at M5 Level
Devonshire, May 6, 2026 —Somersfield Academy today announced a significant strategic shift in its approach to assessment within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) at the M5 level, effective for the 2026–2027 academic year.
As part of this evolution, the Academy will adopt a hybrid assessment model designed to strengthen alignment between MYP 5 and the IB Diploma Programme (DP). This approach reflects the school’s commitment to ensuring a coherent and rigourous academic continuum across its secondary years.
Under the new model, Somersfield Academy will no longer pursue full MYP certification for all students. However, MYP e-Assessment will remain available as an option for students who wish to obtain externally accredited grades in specific subject areas.
The decision follows an extensive period of consultation with key stakeholders, including alumni, current and past families, faculty, the Board of Trustees, and secondary and tertiary guidance counsellors. Additionally, a review of global IB practices informed the shift, noting that many schools prioritise closer alignment between curriculum and assessment in the final years of MYP rather than universal certification.
In place of full certification, M5 students will undertake formal examinations structured to mirror the rigour and format of IB Diploma Programme assessments. This change is intended to better prepare students for the expectations of the DP while creating a more cohesive and aligned assessment experience.
In a statement from the Head of Secondary, Charlie Judd: “Somersfield Academy remains deeply committed to the core principles and philosophy of an IB education,” said Charlie Judd, Head of Secondary. “This strategic evolution enhances academic preparation and ensures our students are well-positioned for success in the Diploma Programme and beyond.”
Further details, including an upcoming information session and supporting resources for current M4 students and their families, will be shared in the coming weeks to support a smooth transition.
