Somersfield Athletes Go the Distance at BSSF Track & Field
March 13, 2025 — Somersfield students delivered outstanding performances at the BSSF senior school track and field event yesterday! Between yesterday and Friday evening 21 athletes will compete.
Rocco Adderley, Andrew Thomas and Grant Reese started the day with the U16 boys discus. Grant won gold with an extremely impressive throw of 38.52m into a 25-knot headwind! This is just 2.28m away from the Carifta qualifying standard of 40.80m. He threw 8m further than 2nd place and beat all of the O16 boys as well by 6m.
Up next, Roman Jones qualified for the finals of the 200m on Friday at 6pm with a personal best time of 25.04. Roman also competed in the 100m however he narrowly missed out on qualifying for the finals.
Carina Bortoli had a great battle with Jaeda Grant from Saltus in the 3000m. The lead went back and forth all race with no one able to pull away until Jaeda just out sprinted Carina in the home stretch. Still Carina took home the silver medal and will be going for gold in the 1500m and 800m on Friday evening. Louis Manning also did his best competing in the 3000m.
Kayla Moniz, Sydney Troake and Annabel Olutiola had solid performances in the U16 girls discus. Gordon Smith also gave his all in the O16 boys shot put and discus. Gordon will compete in the long jump on Friday night.
In the U16 girls shot put Sydney Troake took home gold with an impressive throw of 8.59m. Dezirae Darrell and Paige Lindo also competed well.
Amari Bean missed qualifying for the finals of the 800m by just 9 seconds.
Our final athletes to compete were Brooklyn Barnett, Isaac Davis and Daniel Mildenhall in the U16 shot put. Isaac had the strongest performance placing 6th with a throw of 8.94m.
On Friday evening Shiia Davis and Axel Wideman will compete in the U16 boys long jump. Gordon Smith will compete in the O16 boys long jump. Roman Jones will compete in the final of the O16 boys 200m as well as the O16 boys long jump. Kenzie Lawrence will compete in the U16 girls long jump and Carina Bortoli and Luc Campbell will compete in both the 1500m and 800m finals.
