Student Newspapers Initiative
May 05, 2015 — Somersfield Academy is one of the eight senior schools taking part in the Bermuda National School Salute, with its newspaper feature set to be published tomorrow. This unique initiative, sponsored by The Royal Gazette, celebrates the achievements of local students and schools, with each institution contributing its own themed coverage and events.
As part of the National School Salute, the streets of Hamilton have been adorned with colourful ribbons spiralling up light poles, each representing the school colours of one of Bermuda’s senior schools. The ribbons, now a familiar sight around the city, highlight the pride that students, teachers, and alumni feel for their schools.
Somersfield’s involvement in the campaign gives our students an opportunity to showcase their hard work, talents, and the school’s values. The school’s newspaper will offer a glimpse into the achievements of its students, focusing on their innovative ideas, commitment to the environment, and their passion for learning.
The National School Salute not only honours the efforts of students but also strengthens the connection between schools and the wider community. Education Minister Wayne Scott praised the initiative for giving students a platform to share their experiences and insights, and for promoting greater involvement in the education system.
The campaign, which will run for two weeks, is aimed at raising awareness of the positive developments happening within local schools, while also providing a space for students. Each participating school, including Somersfield Academy, has worked closely with The Royal Gazette to bring these stories to life.
