Somersfield Students Compete at Public Speaking and Debate Tournament

This past weekend, several of our students participated in the 16th Annual Public Speaking and Debate Tournament held at Warwick Academy, competing against students from participants from other Bermuda private schools, Whitney Institute and St. John's Ravenscourt in Manitoba. We are very proud of the dedication and effort they demonstrated.

During the Public Speaking events on Thursday and Friday, the following students represented our school:

Jameson Feldman placed 2nd in the News Podcast category. This is Jameson's second year in a row placing in his category.
Djibril Aw placed 3rd in Interpretive Reading and 2nd in After-Dinner Speaking in the High School Division.
Kate Pursell also competed in the public speaking events.

For the Debate Tournament on Saturday, we had two teams competing:

Middle School Division

  • Della Master

  • Kate Pursell

  • Jameson Feldman

High School Division

  • Naomi Crofton

  • Reece Storey

  • Rory Forrest

While neither of our debate teams placed this year, they represented the school extremely well in a very competitive field. The High School Division was won by Warwick Academy Team A, featuring alumni Annie Pursell and Jackson Langley, who successfully argued in favor of the introduction of universal basic income.

Thank you to Ameina Soares and Fergus O'Connell who volunteered as timekeepers for the entire day on Saturday.

Many of our students spent over 20 hours at Warwick Academy across the 3 days, which is an incredible commitment of time and energy and the countless hours of preparation to compete. Their preparation, perseverance, and willingness to challenge themselves deserve recognition.
