Weather Update: Hurricane Lee Preparation
UPDATE Wednesday 13 September at 4:00 pm
At 3pm the EMO have stated that government offices will be open tomorrow, and only closing on the morning of Friday, 14 September. However, they have advised that all public schools will close on Thursday and Friday.
The Bermuda Independent Schools Association have decided to close Thursday, 14 September and Friday, 15 September to ensure the health and safety of students, staff and parents.
We have also decided to postpone our Town Hall which was scheduled for Thursday evening. Date to be announce.
Please monitor your email and social media for the status of the school reopening on Monday.
We are closely monitoring the approach of Hurricane Lee, which is currently a threat to Bermuda. As we are in hurricane season, it is important for you to be aware of our School Closure Policy.
School closure during a school day:
In the event of a major storm threatening the island (or an incidence of fire or loss of power) the school may be forced to close during its normal working hours.
1. The school will monitor the Bermuda Weather Station and notifications from the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO). If Government Offices and businesses are closing, the decision to close will be made by the Principal in collaboration with the Leadership Team. In such an emergency, public transport is unlikely to operate and parents will need to collect their children from school.
2. Parents will be notified via email, local media (radio stations, Bernews, etc.) in addition to a message placed on the school’s website and on social media accounts.
Students will be available to be collected from their respective pick-up areas at a designated time. After the first hour, all students will be taken to the gymnasium to await collection.
School closure after hours:
In the event that conditions are such that the school cannot open, the following will take place:
Should Government Offices and businesses not open, the school will also close.
Radio stations and the local media will be notified of the school’s decision to remain closed.
Emails will be sent to parents in addition to the school’s website and social media accounts carrying the message.
School re-opening:
Once it is determined that the school is safe and secure to conduct classes, and the electricity has been restored, the notification of when the school will be opening will be communicated to the radio stations. Emails will be sent to parents, and a message posted to the school’s website and social media accounts.
Please note:
The Bermuda Independent Schools Association (BHS, Bermuda Institute, MSA, Warwick Academy, Saltus, BCCL, Chatmore and Somersfield Academy) have adopted a common School Closure Policy and have agreed to liaise with each other.
Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is always our greatest concern.
