Somersfield Students serenade Prince Edward
March 17, 2011 — Students at Somersfield Academy serenaded the Earl of Wessex this afternoon as part of his whirlwind visit to the Island. Prince Edward listened to young musicians Leah Amaral, Savannah Stubbs, and Shamar Morris perform a rendition of Taylor Swift’s "You Are Not Sorry". He commended them for sharing their talents and praised more than a dozen participants of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Somersfield Academy is the newest school to adopt the D of E programme, according to school head Jim Christopher. He noted that his students had participated in the self-development programme for the past two years, compared to others like Berkeley Institute, which has a well-established history with the scheme.
Prince Edward, a trustee of the D of E Award Foundation, met with 460 students aged from three to 16 at the Devonshire school this afternoon. Pre-school student Imojen Judd, three, expressed her excitement about meeting a prince, anticipating he would have “very different clothes” and “a shiny car”. Nicholas Kempe, six, a Primary One student, thought it was “cool” that a member of the Royal Family visited his school and admired the prince’s “golden” suit.
