Celebrating our Volunteers and Donors

Somersfield Academy celebrated the generosity, service, and community spirit of its volunteers and donors during its annual Donor and Volunteer Appreciation Evening on Tuesday, June 9.

Held on the Commemorative Pathway beside the Butterfly Garden and Alumni Hallway, the event recognised the individuals and families whose contributions of time, talent, and philanthropy continue to enrich the school community. “A Tribute to Bermuda” ship mosaic, generously donated by Johnathan Trott and designed by Kendra Earls, provided a striking backdrop for the evening, while artwork from the school's award-winning 35th Anniversary float and the 35th Anniversary Giving Day Banner, recognising every family who participated in this year's campaign, created a fitting setting for the celebration.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the school's Volunteer of the Year Award to Coach Tommy Johnson, whose dedication to Somersfield's basketball programme spans multiple teams from middle school through senior levels. Through years of weekly practices, games, and mentorship, Johnson has made a significant impact on student-athletes both on and off the court. The award was presented by Director of Activities Emma Moran-Lee alongside last year's recipient and PTA President Pamela Fraser.

The evening also recognised the many volunteers and supporters whose efforts strengthen the Somersfield community throughout the year.

Parent, alumna, and founding family member Alex Jones presented Zarah Siddiqi with a certificate recognising her Founder's Award Scholarship, honouring her as a student who embodies the qualities envisioned by the school's founders: a socially conscious, independent thinker.

Guests also heard reflections from Jody Feldman and Greg Garnier on another record-breaking annual golf fundraiser, which achieved its highest levels of volunteer participation and fundraising to date. Nicola Paugh spoke about the work of the school's Class Advocates, parent volunteers whose enthusiasm and outreach helped propel this year's Giving Day campaign beyond its ambitious $200,000 goal. Head of School Riki Teteina also acknowledged the Parent Teacher Association for its continued commitment to volunteering, fundraising, and organising events that strengthen the Somersfield community.

The evening marked another milestone with the presentation of the inaugural Alumni Volunteer of the Year Award to Marquis Burgess. Through Betta Dais, a social organisation of Somersfield alumni and friends, Burgess has helped raise funds that provide life-changing educational opportunities for students who otherwise may not have been able to attend the school. Beyond financial support, he also serves as a mentor to scholarship recipients. His commitment, together with the longstanding involvement of his brother and parents, reflects a family tradition of service to Somersfield.

Charlie Judd and Alison Kempe also shared heartfelt reflections on philanthropy and community, reminding attendees of the enduring impact that generosity can have on future generations of students.

"Evenings like this remind us that our greatest strength is our community," said Kristen Scott Ndiaye, Director of Advancement. "The volunteers, donors, alumni, parents, and friends who give so generously of their time and resources help shape the unique culture of Somersfield’s socially conscious, independent thinkers."

Somersfield Academy also invited members of the community to leave a lasting legacy through the purchase of commemorative bricks along the Commemorative Pathway. Proceeds support the school's Annual Fund, helping pave the way for future generations of students while creating a permanent tribute to those who have shaped Somersfield's story.
