Summer Break Advisory: Bermuda Police Service

June 2023 —- With the lengthy summer break approaching, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) wishes to remind parents and guardians of teenagers in particular, about the dangers of alcohol consumption and drug use.

In the lead up to and during summer break, teenagers may attend parties or gatherings at the homes of friends or at establishments where alcohol and drugs may be available.

While they may be aware of the dangers associated with consumption of these substances, it is always good practice to remind your child of the significant risk they pose to themselves, as well as other members of the community by operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs can result in reduced awareness leading to increased vulnerability to harms such as accidents, injury and violence.

If your child is hosting an event at your home, you are accountable for the safety and well-being of all those in attendance.

Parents are reminded that the legal age of consumption of alcohol is 18.

Should a child under the legal age consume alcohol while at your residence, you may be liable to prosecution. If persons who are of legal age consume alcohol and become intoxicated, you are responsible for their care. This includes ensuring that they do not drive under the influence, providing them with medical attention if necessary, and contacting their parents or guardians to inform them of the situation.

It is always good practice to ask your child questions. Find out who will be in attendance at these events, whether at your residence or elsewhere, so you are well informed. We also strongly encourage all parents and guardians to speak with your children about the risks associated with drug and alcohol use and to remind them that their safety and well-being should always be their top priority, no matter what age they are.

Let’s work together to make summer break safe and enjoyable.
