Somersfield Students Raise $600 for Ukraine Aid Efforts

Somersfield Academy students handed over funds they raised to the Bermuda Red Cross for its Ukraine fund.

May 16, 2022 — Students at Somersfield Academy raised $600 to support efforts in war-torn Ukraine.

The school hosted a student-led bake sale and a friendship bracelet drive led by school advisor Kim Rose to help raise the funds.

The bracelets were created by students in the Ukrainian flag’s colours of blue and yellow and were made available to the entire school. Children of all ages purchased the bracelets which sold for $5 each.

Ms Rose said: “I never thought the students would embrace the idea with such vigour and determination. They spent hours making hundreds of bracelets, they taught other students how to make them and sold them to not only raise funds for Ukraine but to show solidarity.

“We are immensely proud of their efforts, which highlight what we can achieve as a community when we come together.”

Maya Rajeh, a Somersfield student, said creating the bracelets was a "meaningful“ experience.

Students handed the funds to the Bermuda Red Cross Ukraine fund last week.
