M1 & M2’s Pop Art with a Bermudian Twist
Update (May 5): We are thrilled to share that Somersfield’s mural was awarded Third Place in the Luscar Place School Mural Contest! The judges recognised the team’s thoughtful interpretation of the theme, creative execution, and strong collaborative effort—earning Somersfield a $2,000 prize to support the arts. Congratulations again to our talented students and their dedicated teachers!
May 02, 2025 — Thirteen of our talented M1 and M2 students recently participated in the School Mural Contest at the construction site of Luscar Place (formerly the Belvedere Building) on Pitt’s Bay Road.
Alongside many other schools they brought colour and creativity to the theme: “Bermuda in the Style of Andy Warhol.” Somersfield's mural proudly celebrated iconic Bermudian symbols — the traditional Bermuda kite and the white roof — with a pop art twist!
While Warhol often used bright, saturated hues in his work, we’ve chosen to use soft pastel colours that reflect the natural beauty of Bermuda. To add contrast and visual interest, the kites feature bold and striking colours. In homage to Warhol’s printmaking techniques, we have incorporated a simplified printmaking process in our mural creation.
In just seven hours, they brought a bold, pop art–inspired vision to life—showing creativity, collaboration, and focus under pressure. Their efforts secured funding for the arts, with final judging today for an even larger prize.
