Kids’ Clean Up Helps Starving in Somalia

June 02, 1993 — Montessori Academy students’ clean up helps starving in Somalia, with the help of Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB), the students used National Clean-up Day on June 12 to launch a project called Class Action -- an acronym for Collect Litter Aid Starving Somalia. "Our students were aware of the plight in Africa through extensive school projects,'' organiser Mrs. Jill Faulks said. "They wanted to actively participate in the global efforts to help alleviate the suffering. "The most important factor of this project was to re-enforce our students' awareness of the continuing need for community service. "We found it appropriate when KBB suggested that it would be helpful to Bermuda if we sought out a sight that needed cleaning and to clean it on a sponsorship basis for Somalia. "KBB provided the tools needed to clean the Parsons Beach area which we chose.'' The money was raised from pledges from their families and some companies. This week the students thanked the Bermuda Red Cross which helped the students throughout with up-to-date information from its operations in Somalia. "The Red Cross will now make sure the money goes directly towards the ongoing humanitarian efforts,'' Mrs. Faulks said.
