Somersfield Traditions: Primary Eco-Shopping Day

Each December, the halls of Somersfield buzz with excitement as one of our most beloved traditions returns: Eco-Shopping. Designed especially for our Primary students, Eco-Shopping invites children to browse and purchase gently used and new toys, books, and games—each item previously and generously donated by members of our school community.

More than just a shopping experience, Eco-Shopping is a hands-on lesson in environmental responsibility. Students learn the value of reusing and repurposing items, discovering that “new to you” can be just as special as brand new. As they make thoughtful choices, children practice decision-making, budgeting, and independence in a joyful, age-appropriate way.

This annual tradition also reflects the strength of our Somersfield community. Donations from families give items a second life, while proceeds from Eco-Shopping support the work of the SPTA, helping to enrich programmes and experiences throughout the school year. It’s a meaningful way for students to see how their actions—both big and small—can make a positive impact.

Eco-Shopping is a perfect example of Somersfield values in action: caring for the environment, supporting one another, and celebrating together. Each December, it reminds us that the most meaningful gifts are rooted in intention, sustainability, and community spirit.
