M2 Students Explore Marine Conservation with "Kids On The Reef"

Last week, our M2 students embarked on a remarkable journey that not only deepened their appreciation for marine life but also taught them valuable skills in free-diving. This extraordinary adventure was made possible through a collaboration between Somersfield Academy, the Bermuda Zoological Society, and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo, all under the guidance of the renowned Dr. Alex Amat.

Kids On The Reef is a full immersion program is more than just a field trip; it's a transformative experience designed to instill in young minds the importance of marine conservation and the art of free-diving.

The day began with an enlightening information session, where students were introduced to the fundamentals of marine life and the essential techniques of free-diving. They learned about the wonders of the ocean and the role each of us plays in preserving its fragile ecosystem. Safety was paramount, with students mastering stretches and breathing techniques to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.

In the first leg of their adventure, students donned snorkeling gear and explored the vibrant shallow waters, encountering an array of local species like pufferfish, cowfish, and even the elusive octopus. It was a mesmerizing glimpse into the underwater world that left our young adventurers in awe.

The highlight of the day was the free-diving session, where students ventured into deeper waters, testing their newfound breathing techniques to reach the ocean floor, approximately 6 meters below the surface. This exhilarating challenge pushed their boundaries and revealed the remarkable resilience of young minds.

"Kids On The Reef" not only fostered a profound connection with the ocean but also empowered our students with the knowledge and skills needed to become stewards of marine conservation. It was a day filled with wonder, discovery, and the promise of a brighter, more sustainable future for our oceans. We are immensely grateful to Dr. Alex Amat and our dedicated partners for making this incredible experience possible, and we can't wait to see how our M2 students continue to champion the cause of marine conservation.
