A Micro-forest for Somersfield
The M3 Community Project is a time for Somersfield students, ages 13 and 14, to give back to the community through a project of their choice. Addy, Aura and Zoë need your help to bring theirs to life.

Help Us Build a Micro-forest at Somersfield
The three of us, Addy DeCouto, Aura Doran, and Zoë Mir, are all M3 students at Somersfield Academy. For our M3 Community Service Project, we are planting a micro forest at Somersfield. We chose to do this project after noticing a news article about a micro forest in the Warwick playground and seeing the blankness on the back wall of Somersfield. We wanted to make it more kid friendly.
Our project supervisor is Mrs. Swan and this project will be done in collaboration with the Bermuda Zoological Society Micro Forest Project. A micro forest is made up of many endemic and native trees and bushes planted closely together to mimic a real forest. Along with planting the micro forest, we are
educating children and putting up bird boxes;
helping to produce cleaner air;
creating a nicer aesthetic for the cliffside area; and
providing service and learning opportunities for students.
We have plotted the land, it’s time for you to adopt a tree.

Zoë Mir
My name is Zoë Mir, and I have been at Somersfield since I was two. I love science, math, art, sports, and environmental work, and I have participated in many rallies and beach cleanups over the years. I am currently working on a coral reef restoration project as part of the 2022 Bermuda Youth Climate Summit. I am thrilled to be planting a micro forest for my M3 Community Project, and I hope this initiative can be continued at Somersfield in the future.

Addy DeCouto
My name is Addy DeCouto, and I’ve attended Somersfield since I was three. I’m a dancer, and I think that my training has led me to be very goal-oriented, which is part of why I believe that planting the micro forest is something that we can achieve. This project means a lot to me because both Zoë, Aura and I have been working towards helping Somersfield to be more environmentally friendly for years, and now we get to make it happen ourselves.

Aura Doran
I’m Aura, and I've always been interested in helping the environment. In P6, I took part in a climate change rally, and in M2, I was able to host one of my own. I think that the micro forest project will really benefit the environment and Somersfield, and I’m glad that my friends and I are leading it. It's important to me because this is a necessary step in the right direction to helping our school reduce its eco footprint.
